Computers can be a real pain when problems occur for luddites like me. I am running windze 8.1 at the mo. I have the offer of a free upgrade to 10 but I worry just how much disc space and memory it wants.....
I think for now Windows 10 is free but apparently pretty soon they'll be charging for it. In fact, that could have already happened, I'm not sure.
Having stuck with windows 10 for a bit now, I can confirm that actually it's not all that bad. I use google chrome as a browser so I think that is why nothing much seems to have changed in how I use the internet. When it comes to photos, documents etc - that layout is a bit different but I soon got used to it.
Duke went back to windows 8.1 as he still uses Internet Explorer - that no longer exists with windows 10. They have a new browser, Duke couldn't get on with it and was at risk of throwing the laptop out the window so reverted back to what he was used to.
As for disc space and memory...no clue whatsoever. My technical abilities don't stretch that far I'm afraid!
(I feel like I've just written a fairly poor review for Computer Weekly or some other such publication. This could be a whole new thing for me. Poorly written reviews for people who know fuck all about computers. Or cars. Or travelling by plane. The list is endless....)
I am not a big fan of windoze period and of all the offerings i believe win 8 is about the worst but when my old computer running win 7 threated to die I went out and (with great trepidation) got a new laptop with win 10. Having managed to salvage old faithful(mostly turning off a bunch of shit it does aromatically) it was passed on to the mrs who is not particularly computer savvy and all in all has not been too bad an experience. Of course we have my son who is good on the damn things to do quite a bit of "customization" of the system and we immediately reject to word processors and browsers provided in favor of Open Office and Firefox. I note that for me to say that a Microsoft product is "not bad" is a ringing endorsement!!
PS, Dont worry they will soon come out with a new OS so that they can build in more problems......
I wish I had the guts to totally dump windoze and go to Linux but its hard for old guys to learn new tricks, I do have it on a little notepad and have had no problems except some incompatible software. Most folks dont know that Linux will run 99% of software designed for windoze and that there are 1000s of free made for Linux programs out there. It can even be run from Cd to try without uninstalling windoze. I am a fan but have not yet totally abandoned Microsoft ....till they Wizzlepop me off next time!!
Crappylappy uses windows vista, its great! No, hang on, shit, thats what I meant, its shit. Since day one I had a suspect copy of word loaded onto it because it came with works as a word processing thing and it was awful.
Now many years along crappylappy is on its last legs. Ive already replaced thd battery once with a totally legit and not at all dodgy one from amazon. I haven't used IE on it for a while having downloaded chrome which is fine and I have a pay security so that all seems ok. Also the left mouse button jams, the '@ key doesnt work well and most infuriating it has an extremely fickle relationship with the wifi. Hence today im typing single fingeredly on irritating stoopidtinytablet which invokes much typos and aggravate my carpel tunnel.
I did consider downloading win10 but whats the point.mi just need a new machine.
Its a pity you can't take one for a test run, like a car. One thing I find is when I've used other laptops, the mouse pad isin the wrong place for me to be comfortable, mits too far over. The main thing I need to look for is how the actual machine is laid out rather than the os. That can be changed I guess.
Its too hard! I need to just impulse buy one. ooh its on offer and ots purple, thatll do.
