Well guys. I have just read the most brilliant book. Harrys last stand. Harry Leslie Smith who some of you may already know of from his Guardian column. He is 91 years of age and a social activist. The book charts his life from his birth into poverty then joining the Royal Air Force when war came. The aftermath of the war and the birth of the welfare state and its impact on the health and security of the nation through free education the availability of improved housing and the newly formed National Health Service. He says that he and others of his generation fought that war not only to eliminate Nazi tyranny but to bring a better and fairer society at home for all. My late father would have said the very same thing. He is now quite rightly furious that all that effort from millions of his generation to achieve that aim is being ripped apart by the subsequent governments.
It is a passionate and well written book. Read it if you can.
